When you start shopping for kitchen sinks you will notice that there are many styles and finishes to pick from. Two important things to consider are size and the number of holes for the faucet and accessories.
Size: The size of the sink is especially important if you will be installing your new kitchen sink in an existing counter top hole. Buying a sink that is a little larger that the old sink is usually not a problem because the opening can be expanded to the right size. Before shopping measure the whole where the old kitchen sink was installed. Faucet Holes: The number of holes required for a faucet installation will depend on the faucet and any accessories that it comes with or you choose to add. It does not matter if you pick the sink first and then the faucet or the other way around as long as you match the number of holes required with the number of holes the sink has. If this installation is on a new counter it is a good idea to have the counter top installer cut the hole for new sink. Once the counter top is cut the sink install is easy. It is easier to install the kitchen faucet and the sink strainers before you set the sink onto the counter.
This way you do not have to reach up under the sink to install the faucet which can sometimes be a little difficult. Once the sink hardware is on then you can set the sink itself. First double check that the sink fits in the hole by setting the sink in place and making sure it covers up the hole on all sides.

Ideally you will want an overlap of 1/2" all the way around the sink. Once you know the sink will fit remove it and proceed with the installation. Apply caulking or silicone around the rim of the sink hole on the counter top.

A liberal amount should be applied because once the sink is set it is too difficult to add more. Any excess can be wiped off after the sink is in position. The caulking will seal the gap between the counter and the sink so water will not leak down under the cabinet and cause damage to the cabinet. Next carefully set the sink in place.
Make sure the sink is level on both sides by measuring the back splash to the sink and making them even. Also make sure there are no gaps on any of the sides by centering it. Now you will be setting the clamps. All clamps are a little different but most hook onto the groves in the sink and then tighten to the plywood on the underside of the counter top. A minimum of two clamps on each side should be enough, but you can use more if the sink sits up in any areas. Check between every couple of clamps to make sure the sink did not move. Once the sink is securely clamped onto the counter top you can check the seal above the counter.
Start by wiping away any extra caulking with a wet rag or sponge. Wipe all sides of the sink evenly. Then make sure there is caulking in the crack all the way around by putting your head down and counter height and inspecting it. Make sure your caulking lines look nice, even, and not overflowing.
They should fill the void but not be like a speed bump. Allow the caulking to dry thoroughly before getting any water on the counter.
